Will this be the year of the earthquake disasters? An 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Santiago, Chile with an initial death toll of 47. After 90 seconds of shaking buildings were downed as well as a bridge and phone lines were down in the nearby major population center of Concepcion.
Of course death tolls are expected to rise and communication lines are established, buildings are searched, and the missing are reported. However, since the earthquake was centered farther away from major population centers than was the Haitian earthquake the damage is likely to be much less severe even though the earthquake was larger. Also, the Chilean people are better prepared and better equipped than the Haitian people.
Still, pray for Chile.
